Melbourne airport has become home to the largest commercial kitchen in the southern hemisphere, courtesy of Alpha Flight Services.

A state-of-the-art 11,000 square metre facility has been built for the aviation catering company, containing two commercial kitchens, four custom-made blast chillers, a dedicated presentation kitchen, bakery, 100-seat cafeteria and waste treatment plant.

Currently, the dnata subsidiary caters for 4,000 flights a month; the new facility will enable the Alpha to plate up more than 750,000 meals per month.

Melbourne Airport Chief of Property, Linc Horton, commented on the new development: “We’re pleased to have Alpha Flight Services operate on Melbourne airport’s doorstep. It’s not only a great fit for the company and our airline customers but also the community surrounding the precinct,” he said.

Set to serve 64m travellers by 2033, Melbourne airport is a bustling transport hub and one of Victoria’s largest employers, with more than 16,000 people working in the airport or airport-related occupations. The addition of Alpha Flight Services’ kitchen will add further job and career opportunities to the already this plentiful offering.

“We are delighted to assist Alpha Flight Services in creating their dream kitchen and wish them much success in their new home,” Horton went on to say.

President of parent company, Gary Chapman, said that growth in the Australian travel industry is generating new opportunities to serve its airline customers. “This investment in the new Melbourne facility reflects our confidence in the market as well as our continuous commitment to deliver the highest standards in in-flight meals to our airline customers and their passengers,” Chapman commented.
