Economy Class guests on Lufthansa’s intercontinental flights are now enjoying their meals and drinks served on all-new contemporary tableware.

The redesign encompasses the full dining range of trays, plates, cups, packaging and accessories, which will all appear in the new look over the next couple of days, as around 900,000 individual units go into service worldwide.

The simple, elegant design is the product of a collaboration between Lufthansa’s Product Management team and designers from the LSG subsidiary company, Spiriant.

According to a press release by the airline, the new design is characterised by its “faceted shapes,” “dynamic lines” and a combination of matt and smooth surfaces, “to ensure a pleasant feel”. Curiously, the tray is said to hold the meal in a slightly tilted position.

The new tableware is also more environmentally friendly than the previous design, as the use of disposable materials has been minimised. This will significantly reduce the volume of waste. It is hoped that the ergonomics and aesthetics of the tableware will stand the test of time in the face of changing fashions.

Furthermore, owing to the space-saving design of the new trays, one trolley will be able to accommodate more meals than before, and slip-resistant materials, like the new anti-skid coating, will make doling out the meals easier for the crew.
